Jessica the Hippo - An Update

Jessica Update.

This is an update to my first Jessica clip. Notice how careful the videographer has to be around Jessica, and how relaxed she is with her family.

At nine years of age shouldn't Jessica have been weaned from her mother and be living in the wild? Isn't there a definite danger in allowing a wild animal to become so spoiled that she never leaves the roost, so to speak? In that way she is like some adult children who never leave home. It does not help her to establish herself, mate and raise a family of her own. It is a cute story but a dangerous one.

You are so right. The whole situation is a dangerous one. In the first post about Jessica, http://whatanimalsthink.blogspot.com/2009/04/jessica-hippo.html, they did mention that she is free to come and go as she pleases, but she always comes back. I looked for an update on the story and frankly, was surprised to see that she is still there, with her own bed.

I hope nature gets the best of Jessica and she'll mate and leave her human family. This whole thing is very unusual.

Jessica almost killed me while on a tour in 2005, it was my fault as I know wild is wild is wild in an animal, but I could not resist the chance to swim with a hippo..... but her caretaker did not even notice me fly up the bank out of the water, all I saw was a huge gapping mouth, a roar and barely jumped out of the way....a bad scene indeed. She will kill someone.

What an unusual and sweet relationship between an animal and humans. Jessica is free to go as she pleases. Previous comments seem insensitive and out of place. No one has to go visit her. Remember all the animals in captivity that are being tortured and abused every day.
